Professor John Evans Atta Mills, president of Ghana is dead.
His death was announced today by his office. "it is with a heavy heart that we announce the sudden and untimely death of the president of the Federal republic of Ghana," the statement said
He died today, after he took ill and was on admission at 37 Military Hospital, Accra, succumbing at last to the numbing hands of death.
According to Ghanaweb.com, President Mills was to leave the shores of Ghana for Nigeria on a one-day working visit today before the sad incident occurred.
His departure to Nigeria was earlier made known on the floor of parliament on Tuesday when his letter to inform the house was read by the Speaker.
President Mills was expected to engage in some bilateral deliberations with his Nigerian counterpart, President Goodluck Jonathan.
The recent foreign retail trade brouhaha was expected to take centre stage during the discussions.
Mills had battled ill-health for several years, with his health status a subject of rumours in Ghana.
Just last month, he visited the United States for two weeks on what he called a ‘routine medical check up’. He returned home on 25 June to a rousing reception.
Mills, 68, became the third elected President of Ghana in a very keen and narrowly won election in 2008. He was inaugurated 0n 7 January 2009.
He had served as Jerry Rawlings vice-president from 1997 to 2001 and was unsuccessful in his presidential bids in 2000 and 2004 as candidate of the National Democratic Congress, losing at both times to John Kufour.
By virtue of Article 60 of the Ghanaian constitution, his deputy, John Dramani Mahama, shall step in as the president
